Duckpdate
Just a little more DUCKIN. I've been slowly organising a bunch of the less exciting stuff this last week so I haven't gotten around to producing too much art, but I've slowly been whittling away at design and collecting a huge reference library.
Oh yeah, and my Uni is sending me to the Cannes film festival next month... that's pretty neat.

The Duck Concept Shots
Here are two proof of concept shots for my new film. Is that the right word for them... Colour boards? Mood boards? I have been a little nervous about how I am going to approach the backgrounds, today I went through every image on the amazing Animation Backgrounds blog. My main challenge is interesting comps that feel organic and natural, while still being economical and simple to produce. I think these tests are a step in the right direction.

Shepard
I just wrapped up Mass Effect 3 (I know I'm a little late to the party, but I just replayed ME2 to prepare)
I don't really know how I feel! I was way too invested in my character and her friends.
So much so I decided to draw her as a means to put her to rest. Cya shep shep!

The Duck Turnarounds and RP Speed Portraits
Want to enhance your drawing day? Get some great new music! I like to theme my music on what I'm drawing,
so I've been listening to lots of Louis Armstrong and Pixar soundtracks. Here are my first Duck turnarounds.
I'm fairly happy with the design, I had a realization that the side view of my duck his body is almost a perfect circle with a bite outta it!
I've also started reading In the Blink of an Eye by Walter Murch on my buddy Alex Gee's recommendation.
Fantastic stuff, will be very useful when I start my animatic. It's super interesting reading the perspective of editing when you are given all this footage and have to pick and choose, opposed to animation where you create all your footage from scratch and where cutting out finished shots is incredibly hard and costly to do.
Oh and 4 new RP Speed Portraits:

Duck Concept1
Here is some early Duck design and colour tests!
After a bit more playing around with character volumes and poses I will jump into some mood boards and playing around with environments. I'm a little daunted by doing lip syncs with these guys.

THE DUCK Day Two
Two days into me focusing full time on my next film, The Duck.
The second in my "Large Body of Water" trilogy. (I have no idea what my next film will be but there seems to be a running theme of water..
So far I have:
The second in my "Large Body of Water" trilogy. (I have no idea what my next film will be but there seems to be a running theme of water..
So far I have:
- Finished my first draft script
- Completed my schedule
- Mentally visualised most of the film
I'm going to dive in proper very soon. In fact later today I am going to the University of Queensland with my house mate Harry (who is studying food science there) to sketch and film some ducks!
My biggest challenge with this project is to have the audience connect with Duck faces. I don't want to go the classic daffy/donald look, so we will see what I come up with.
I've planned out the next 9 months and sorta my finances. If I can't manage to crowd fund this thing I may still be able to work on it mostly full time and pick up some freelance here and there, but that isn't ideal to finish the project before January 2013.
Here is what my schedule list looks like (not necessarily in that order:
Script, Kickstarter Pitch, Character Design, Concept Art, Colour Board, Storyboard/Animatic ,Voice Recording, Roughs, Cleans, Backgrounds, Colouring, Comp, Film Score, Sound Mix.
EASY
I'm also about to purchase the rights to adapt this short story (which I'm leaving a little mysterious on purpose) and it aint cheap! (but worth it)
Oh and here is the view to my left. I can sit in my computer chair and hang my legs out the low window. Amazing in this nice Australian sun.
I need to pull those weeds... |

College Humor April Fools
Here is the recent freelance animation project I was on. With John and Franky
http://www.collegehumor.com/aprilfools/2012
(I made and animated the character sprites)
Working under pappa Studio Joho
IN EXCITING NEWS: I'm about to go full time working on my next film, or at least full time on the pitch for my next film for funding opportunities. EXCIIIIIIIIITING.
Oh and in potentially even more exciting news I believe my Uni is flying me to Israel... For the Tel-Aviv student film festival. JESUS!
